Backyard Biodiversity Challenge

What is the Backyard Biodiversity Challenge?

The Backyard Biodiversity Challenge is a week-long challenge schools can participate in, in May. The challenge’s objective is to encourage more school groups to register to our Action Hub platform and partner with their community or local conservation projects to undertake conservation action in their local backyard. To complete the challenge and go into our competition, class groups need to complete one of the four targets:

When does the Challenge run?

The Challenge runs annually between the 15th – 22nd May. The 22nd of May is the International Day for Biological Diversity!

Why participate in the Challenge?

  • There is a competition that class groups can enter if you meet one of our four targets in the Challenge.
  • Through the Challenge, your students can meet and work with local conservation heroes.
  • Your students are likely to learn new skills during the Challenge, such as how to safely check and reset a trap or identifying local weed species in their backyard.
  • As a school, you can make long-term partnerships with local biodiversity projects.
  • By registering to our Action Hub, you will receive regular updates on events taking place in your local area. Creating ongoing opportunities for your class in the future.
